It is with a very heavy heart that Bankstown Basketball Association mourns the loss of referee James O’Toole.
James has long been part of the Bruins family, and has represented the Bruins as an exceptional referee, supervisor, and player. He is known for his cheeky smile, witty conversations, and extraordinary dedication and passion for the education, support and ongoing development of Bruins Junior referees.
Over James’s many years of basketball service, James was awarded numerous prestigious Steve Well’s Junior Referee of the Year Awards as recognition for his hard work to his craft. James represented Bankstown Bruins at both New South Wales State Championships and Senior Finals Weekends, his efforts also took him interstate as a referee for New South Wales at many Australian Junior Championships, at which he always did the association proud.
In more recent years James sought out a professional career as part of the New South Wales Police Force, however, always continued to find time to be part of and support the Bruins family.
We are honoured to have had such an exceptional gentleman as part of the Bruins Family and James’s legacy will continue to live on in the people who he inspired and worked so closely with.
As a tribute to James, we invite the entire Bruins community to wear a blue ribbon on their uniform to signify the amazing life that he lived.
Rest In Peace James, we will continue to honor you with Bruins Pride and Dignity.
Nothing further, than what is recorded above, is known about this young man at the time of publication and further information and photos would be appreciated.

My beautiful son. Forever in my broken heart.
You had so much to live for and loved
by so many.
May you rest in peace sweet baby James
Jimmy, I will miss you my friend, no matter what the situation you always managed to bring a smile to my face. You had your struggles at Sutho, like me, but know I loved your kindness, you were always open with me, I’m just so sorry you didn’t reach out. I saw you just before Christmas at Central and the smile and hug you gave me was as always warm and refreshing. You were a beautiful young man and gone way too early. I will always think of you often and smile in your memory. Just know you were a very special, kind, compassionate, funny young man. Your friend, your mum cop xxx
Rest in deep, peaceful serenity.
My condolences to all family and friends.
My God! So young. My heart breaks.
I’m an officer in another state, ex grunt, medical leave, alcohol recovery since 2018.
Weary from Cptsd / Ptsd, not aggressively suicidal-more dilligaf and apathetic and my life isn’t some ‘special’, precious treasure.
We have 500 of our officers on medical leave /in temp holdings.
Last year, the good commissioner created a medical board process. Prior, it was the shady section 8 (loss of confidence). I suspect most of the 500 officers with non physical illnesses are misdiagnosed because of the simple reason cops wouldn’t often admit to having ‘depressive thoughts’ to police-employed shrinks who (until recently) didn’t show their hand of cards…How can you be honest when being honest could put you on Centrelink within 28 days? Things are changing slowly.
We lost a colleague in 2018, another suicide mid ’21 and another local station OIC self harmed/died two weeks later.
When our Premier announced the med-boarding is expected to attract a ‘handful’ of annual pay-outs ranging up to about $250k tops, it was evident no one briefed him on a likely ‘honesty’ and transparency surge after the med-plan was announced.
I believe that if there’s an organic demand for anything, we can hope to see ‘sustainable supply’…ie we all could do worse than committing to a nation-wide solidarity movement ”demanding”(?) a ‘military’ styled retirement/medical boarding process across our states.
Stand strong and remember you have people who care about you.
I know that feels redundant because self-harm is a place where nothing Earthly matters more than quietening your pain. Guilt? Skeletons in Closets? Shame? Addiction? DV’s at home? Mounting money issues? Fight/Flight mode left your relationships feeling fatefully disconnected? Under investigation? Divorce? (welcome to the 51% club!)…If I can relate, it means others too can relate.
Stop treading the quicksand, brother/sister in blue.
Cheers, Ronald WA
