Little is known of this incident, other than the following brief paragraph in the Advertiser dated 12 April, 1940.

CONSTABLE DIES FROM BULLET WOUND

SYDNEY, April 11. – Plainclothes Constable William Sherman, 40, who was on the staff of the Criminal Investigation Branch, was found in the yard at his home in Victoria Road, Marrickville today with a bullet wound through his head. His service revolver was clasped in his hand and he died two hours later in the Marrickville Hospital. Sherman was on duty at the headquarters of the CIB yesterday and nothing unusual was noticed in his demeanour. Of late, however, he had suffered from nerves. He was the second policeman in Sydney to die from a bullet wound within a few days.

The constable was born about 1900 and at the time of his death was stationed at the Sydney CIB.
