This 73-year-old Dog once ran, passed a ball and tackled, too.

Ken Rowlands, from Lennox Head, is the former Canterbury Bankstown Rugby League Club player who on April 1 was one of about 200 past footballers given a medallion to mark their service to the team.

Ken played about 70 first-grade games for the Bulldogs from 1958 to 1961 ? but they were called the Berries back in those days.

He played in the centres and on the wing.

At the official function held before the Bulldogs’ game at Telstra Stadium, he was rubbing shoulders with rugby league greats Dr George Peponis, Steve Mortimer, Chris Anderson, Terry Lamb and Graeme Hughes.

“It was a wonderful day,” he said.

“It was like a reunion.”

Ken had just finished his probationary term in the NSW police force when he was approached by Ken ‘Tank’ Charlton to join the club.

He was 24 years old.

Ken was playing rugby union with Randwick at the time, and had taken up his first posting to the Belmore ‘call box’ located at the suburban railway station.

He made the switch to league and went on to play with the Berries and the Newtown Jets.

Meanwhile, Ken’s son, Andrew, is currently playing professional rugby union with the Basingstoke club in the United Kingdom.

Andrew is a former Ballina junior, and has been playing in the UK for the past two years.
