To the Newman family,
I just became aware of Terry’s passing. We went through the NSW Police Academy together (Class 175B) and, as well as striking up a good friendship, we were part of the ‘old’ students. Gary Kilgour was the elder statesman at 33 years of age(top left backrow of Class photo), Terry next at 29 and myself at 28. (Terry and myself separated by Louise Laidlaw in front row. Both sporting moustaches.) When we had some spare time at the Academy, Terry would suggest I put him through some punching techniques on the heavy bag, so off we would go to the gym for a workout. Anything to pass the time. We discussed many subjects during morning tea and lunch breaks, involving sport, family (from memory he spoke about 5 children), past employment (Typesetting?), future in policing, etc.
I last heard from Terry in the second half of 1996. He phoned me at Newcastle Police Station to congratulate me on being elected to the Police Association Executive as well as an article I wrote in the Police News. We spoke of the academy days and the direction our lives had taken since then. Terry said we should keep in touch and suggested we have a night out in Sydney in the not too distant future. (plus spouses) I agreed, great idea.
As often happens, life gets in the way and the night out never eventuated, other distractions come into play and good plans go astray. I’m sorry we didn’t maintain contact. He was a good bloke, a genuine person. Sorry to hear of his passing, way to soon, plus the passing of Dianne. Sympathy to all the Newman family.
Phil McKenny.
Hi Phil,
Can you send the Class photo to me for inclusion with Terry’s Memorial Post please mate.
