On 28th September 2006 the sergeant was involved in ceremonial training in Canberra with hundreds of police from across Australia for the dedication ceremony to open the National Police Memorial the following day (Police Remembrance Day). During a rehearsal, the sergeant took ill and collapsed. His condition quickly worsened and despite immediate first aid from fellow police and emergency medical assistance a short time later, he passed away in hospital in Canberra.
The sergeant was born in 1956 and was sworn in as a probationary constable on the 8 December 1975. At the time of his death he was attached to the Ballina Highway Patrol.
