On 18 April, 1962 Constable Oliff was riding a Police Public Safety Bureau motor cycle on wide load escort duties. Just north of Wyong the cycle was involved in a collision with another motor vehicle. The constable was thrown through the air, losing his helmet, and landed on the roadway where he sustained fatal injuries.
The constable was born in 1938 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 31 October, 1960. At the time of his death he was attached to the Public Safety Bureau.

Police Killed in the Execution of their Duty Constable Eric Peter Oliff. About 12.10 p.m. on the 18th April, 1962, Constable Oliff was riding a Departmental motor cycle outfit, on the correct side of the roadway, about 5 miles north of Wyong, preceding two motor vehicles carrying industrial wide loads, which he was escorting. A motor lorry travelling in the opposite direction suddenly veered around two other vehicles on to the incorrect side of the roadway and the nearside front of the lorry struck the motor cycle outfit ridden by Constable Oliff. The Constable was thrown backwards, his head striking a cross member of the lorry and he apparently died instantly.
