Vale Robert McDonagh
The Sydney Roosters are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player Robert McDonagh.
McDonagh, Rooster #475, played 55 games for the Club between 1957 and 1961 as a front rower, most notably in the Club’s 1960 Grand Final side.
Outside of football, ‘Bob’ carved out a long-standing career as a highly respected police sergeant. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy.
The Sydney Roosters extend their heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Robert McDonagh at this time.

Dear Sir,
I remember Bob McDonagh from his playing days but mostly from the ’61 Grand Final v St. George.
In 2001 I saw this gent at a local church and straight away reckoned it was Bob. Several weeks later I approached him to check whether my hunch was correct and sure enough.
The strange thing is I’d already played a couple of games of golf with him at Picton yet for some reason never brought up the subject of football.
Over the next few years I got around to that and it was great talking to him, he was a very likeable character.
It has only just occurred to me today that he might have also played in the Police Team at the lunchtime league in the Domain during the 60s. That team was something to behold. I played there a few times in those days when our Internationals, including Johnny Raper and Bob Landers, were still eligible in that great comp, it also seemed to me that the Police team would give some First Grade sides some stiff opposition.
Could you let me know if there is any record of Bob being in that Police Team, any time late 50s/early 60s.
I would have liked to be at his funeral but have only just come across the Police site with that information.
Regards,
Peter Phelan
