I first met John Doc Boyle when he was stationed at Central No. 1 div in 1969. I had a couple of mates Ross (Roscoe) Carroll and Mike Watson working there. We all used to meet for drinks at the Edinborough Castle Hotel in Pitt St. In those days Doc and Ross were in a small unit that policed SP bookies. They often travelled in country nsw locking up bookies. The manager of the Edinborough Castle Stan Tilletson also became a mate and the whole group of us used to travel to Coffs Harbour a couple of times a year where we stayed at the hoey moey (hotel motel) right on the beach.
I was in contact on and off with Doc until 1986 when I was transferred as a sergeant to Marrickville no. 5 div. I was surprised to discover that Doc Boyle was the O.I.C. and my new boss. Doc retired a couple of years later but we still met occasionally at the Edinborough Castle and Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL. Doc first met his life partner Carol at the Edinborough Castle. R.I.P. Doc.
