Three hundred of Sydney's finest farewelled Deputy Police Commissioner John Colin Perrin last night in an all=crimson room at the Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club. For their $28, the troops got Chicken a la King, Primes Roast Loin of Beef, Apple Studel, selected wines and ales, and a deal of oratory from Commissioner John Avery, Kevin Murray, QC, Deputy Commissioner Barney Ross, and John Ducker, chariman of the Public Service Board, who once aspired to the protfolio of Police Minister. Michael Cleary represented the Government, Mr Murray the citizens, and Jim Samios, MLC, the Opposition. Notable members of the force present included Assistnat Commissioners Bob Shepherd, Lance Stirton, and Angus Graham, and Chief Superintendent Bruce Gould, who was Master of Ceremonies. The gues of honour, a large, cheery man in a grey suit, wears his silver-grey hair short at the back and sides. He became a police cadet on May, 1, 1944, and has received Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee Medal and Police Medal for Distinguised Service, the National medal, and the Australian Police Medal. He first came to public attention as head of the Special Branch in 1978 when, as he later told an inquiry, he gave detectives permission to use a schizoid former heroin addict, Richard Seary, as an undercover agent. Mr Perrin sat at the top table next to saturnine, dark-haired John Avery, whose rival he was for the post of Commissioner in 1984. As he drifts intp peaceful retirement, Mr Perrin may however reflect wryly that he himself might have been Police Commissioner until 1992. An unfortunate turn of events for Mr Perrin followed Justice Lusher's recommendation of a partly civilian Police Board in May 1981, and the implementation of his proposal in November 1983. The post of Commissioner became available in July 1984, and Mr Perri, believed to have State Cabinet support, was reported to be odds-on for the job. Indeed, he was said to have been about to embark on a celebratory Harbour cruise when he head that he had placed second. It was later reported that the former Liberal MP Dr Derek Freeman, the Independent MP John Hatton, and Mr Eddie Assoprardi had made representations to the board about the post. Whatever the reason, the board recommended Mr Avery, and this was accepted by Cabinet, so Mr Perrin remained Deputy Commissioner.
